Wilson Staff Model MT22 Putter Review

The Wilson Staff Model MT22 putter is part of Wilson’s premium Staff Model milled putter line, and it’s packed with technology and design choices aimed at serious golfers who want a classic shape with modern engineering.

The MT22 is Wilson’s strongest mid-mallet effort in years. It’s elegantly milled, well-balanced, and inspires confidence at address. From the first glance to the final putt, it blends roll performance, feel and aesthetics at a competitive price point. I’ve tried the other putters in the Wilson Staff Model range but this was comfortably my favourite. That comes down to personal preference though and the fact that the mid-mallet shape really suits my eye and my stroke.

The MT22 has a half-moon, mid-mallet design with a slant neck, intended for golfers with a slight arc stroke. It bridges the gap between blade and mallet by offering more forgiveness than a blade, while still feeling precise and compact.

The short slant neck provides moderate toe hang, making it ideal for players who rotate the putter slightly during the stroke.

The entire Staff Model line, including the MT22, has been designed with input from Wilson Tour players, focusing on feel, looks, and performance.

LOOKS
5/5

It has a very clean look and features a simple single sightline and a smooth matte satin finish to minimize glare and distractions at address. The face milling is gorgeous too and screams out “premium product”.

The shape, finish, and topline are designed to provide a clean and confident look over the ball, while the subtle branding and minimalist styling make it appealing to traditionalists and purists.

Visually this is one of the nicest putters I’ve seen in recent years, it ticks most of my boxes and just gives off a very premium vibe.

SOUND & FEEL
4.5/5

The MT22 is CNC-milled from soft 304 stainless steel, giving it a buttery-soft feel as well as a premium aesthetic. I loved the feel and sound on offer. It delivers a satisfying tock at impact, which is not too muted or harsh.

PERFORMANCE
4.5/5

The MT22 features removable heel and toe weights (commonly 15g or 20g) to optimize MOI and head stability. The result of this is better forgiveness on off-centre strikes and a more stable stroke path, particularly on slight arc strokes. I certainly noted the forgiveness on offer when I didn’t find the middle of the face, although that didn’t happen as often as I’m used to when testing various putters, largely because this is such a good fit for me.

The roll was true and consistent, which I’d expect given the precision milling. Wilson uses a specific “flywheel” face milling pattern (similar to the TM22 and BL22) that helps improve friction at impact and encourages a quicker forward roll, reducing skidding and bouncing. This was evident out on the course especially.

While I tested this putter extensively on my artificial putting surface at home, it was on the course when it really came into its own. Don’t get me wrong, I missed a lot of putts because that’s what I do! It’s a big weakness and probably always will be, but missing a putt for me is usually about poor green reading rather than anything else, and as long as I make good contact I have learned to live with the outcome. Good contact was not hard to find with this putter.

VERDICT
4.5/5

I love this putter. Across various green speeds, it performed reliably for me and the only thing I’d change about it is the grip, which is a little thin for my own preference. For golfers wanting a subtle arc stroke putter with premium fidelity, without the price premium of other big-name brands, this could be the perfect match.
